Congratulations to Seah Chee Kiat for his AMII success!

Our very own Seah Chee Kiat is celebrating his AMII success, passing one of the most highly respected and challenging qualifications in our industry with flying colours. We asked him how he did it.

Q: Why did you decide to take the AMII qualification?
The main reason was to improve my technical skills in general insurance so that I can serve our customers in a completely professional manner. Of course, it is also a dream of mine and one of my late father's dearest wishes. I didn't get the chance to do a degree or diploma, since my parents couldn't afford to support me after secondary school. He would be thrilled to know I passed.

Q: How will it help you in your career?
The AMII is a definite benefit for career advancement, just as it is for people in other technical roles like marketing, underwriting, and all the tasks associated with being an intermediary in the industry. It's important because there is a lack of new blood and real professionalism nowadays. Also, general insurance in Malaysia is getting more and more competitive, and the consumer mindset has also changed. We need to keep up.

Q: How did you find the time to study?
I studied after work and at the weekends, whenever I wasn't playing golf, as well as some evenings. I also attended AMII classes twice a week.

Q: Did you find any of the subjects a challenge?
Yes, there are many subjects that are are very difficult. Reinsurance, insurance law and risk management were really challenging, but insurance law was the most difficult of all because, like most of us, I don't have a legal background.

Q: Which subjects were the easiest?
I think there is no such thing as 'easy' at AMII level! Personally, my easiest subject was the Insurance Practice exam, which covers all the general principles of insurance.

Q: Did you enjoy studying?
Yes, but the part that I enjoyed most was the time spent in the classroom, where practical knowledge was shared by the lecturer and my classmates. A lot of the time there are gaps between the practical and the theory, and class time offers the perfect chance to clarify things. Because it isn't easy to study while working, self motivation is very important to keep yourself moving forwards.

Q: What are you going to do with your spare time now you don't have to study any more?
I'm going to take a well-earned break from studying and focus hard on my work instead, using everything I have learned. You never know, I might try the ACII, the Chartered qualification, next, in 2019. But right now, it's time for me to improve my golfing skills!

Q: Do you think any of your colleagues should also take the qualification
I strongly encourage my colleagues to take this qualification because it sharpens our technical skills so well, something that's important for good customer service.
